Hot 100 Update

It’s time for my Hot 100 update. The Hot 100 began on September 23 which is exactly 100 days away from the end of the year. It’s a way to set goals and remain focused on them to end the year with a bang.

Here were my goals for this week:

1. Run 15 miles per week. This will keep me on target to reach my goal of 500 miles for the year. I only ran 10 this week. (*see below)

2. Log my food and exercise into My Fitness Pal everyday Didn’t log a single day.

3. Bike once per week. Nope.

4. Blog at least twice per week THIS I did. :-D

5. Visit, read, and comment on at least 25 blogs per week Done!

*I’ve not had a good running week at all. You might recall how I fell during my Saturday run. I didn’t physically hurt myself, but it did thwart my running for that day. Well, for my Tuesday run (4 miles) I was fine during the run, but I came home and had excruciating pain in my left foot afterward. And I mean EXCRUCIATING. I could hardly put any pressure on it at all – I really thought it was broken. I iced it and hoped it would just “go away”.

It didn’t.

It’s gotten better over the past couple of days, but the pain is still there and I’m afraid to run.

So, I haven’t.

I decided not to run until I had a doctor look at it, just to be safe. Except I don’t have health insurance, so going to the doctor isn’t as simple for me as it is for others who do. I went to the ER and was turned away, so I will probably go to Urgent Care tomorrow [or figure something out]. I just hope it’s nothing major and doesn’t have a negative effect on my training because I have quite a few races on my schedule! I’m registered for a 10K next week, Ragnar in 6 weeks, the Gobble Gobble 4 miler in 7 weeks, and the Disney Half Marathon in 13 weeks. I can’t get hurt now!

Oh, and speaking of Ragnar, (which is the Relay Race across Florida that I’m doing next month) …I found out my runner slot the other day. I am Runner #6 which is a total of 17.5 miles! My first leg is 7.6 miles, my second leg is 4.1 miles, and my last leg is 5.8 miles. My first reaction was one of fear and nervousness, but I think/hope I’m ready for the challenge. I am also really looking forward to meeting the team of runners that I’ll be running with. I’ve been emailing Amy, the team coach, for a while now and am SO excited to meet her and the others!

Anyway, that’s how my week has been…how’s yours?

On this day last year: 10 Days

317.7 miles walked/jogged/ran since January 1st. (2010 Goal: 500)
65.0 miles biked since January 1st. (2010 Goal: 300)
(6) 5Ks finished since January 1st.

Uht oh! I hope your foot heals up FAST! As I’m reading this, I’m praying, “No stress fracture! No stress fracture! No stress fracture!” Keep us updated on what’s going on. Rest up!

I agree with the stress fracture comment. Don’t be worried, but take care of your foot and get to that doctor! If it’s a stress fracture, it’s bad and you will have to take significant time off running. This exact thing happened to me in my leg a couple years ago before some big runs and I was devastated. Know that if it is a stress fracture, you WILL get through it and it’s not the end of the world.

But…I was actually thinking it sounded like plantar fasciitis. Equally as painful, but not as serious. While you are trying to get to the doctor, try this…

1) Stay off your foot as much as possible. Easier said than done, but just make every effort. If you are worried about exercise, stick to weight training for a little bit. You could try swimming, but I wouldn’t even go that far.

2) Take an anti-inflamatory, such as motrin, regularly to reduce the pain and inflamation. I took 800 mg 4 times a day for a week, but cut it back if you are uncomfortable with that dose. Also, clearly be sure to modify this if your doctor ends up prescribing you something.

3) Ice often. If you work at a desk, get a plastic water bottle, fill it with water, and freeze it. Put it under your desk and roll your foot on it a couple times a day. You will likely have to refreeze between uses, but you get the idea. I think my doctor told me 15 minutes every 2-3 hours, but that part is a bit hazy because I just did it as often as I could remember.

If it’s plantar fasciitis and it’s not severe, the pain should go away in a week or so. You can try adding some walking again after that, but do NOT run until you are sure the pain is completely gone or it will flair up again and you’ll have to start all over.

Again, this is my experience and I am not a doctor. But thought I would pass it along in case you run into trouble with the whole doctor/insurance thing.

Most importantly, don’t get down about it. It’s a setback, but nothing that will stop you! You are amazing!!

I hope you are okay! I had a little accident skiing and it was months and several thousand dollars to recovery. Sigh.

Oh, no, Josie! I’m hoping you got a chance to get your foot checked out and that it’s not something that will keep you from doing your running events. I’m going through something similar now, and it’s frustrating.

Josie, I hope your foot gets better soon. You are wise to take it easy until you can get it looked at. I can’t imagine going to the hospital and being turned away! That is awful.

I also had plantar fasciitis. It was painful. I didn’t know what it was so I didn’t take proper care of it and it ended up taking weeks for it to go away. I agree with the advice to ice it and rest it.

Hope you’re feeling better soon.
We are obliged to take health insurance and although it costs a lot of money I’m always glad we have one.

And when you’re leg is feeling better: I’m hosting a virtual run in the last weekend of October and would love it if you would join. Check my blog for details.

I know you didn’t meet all your goals for this week but I still think you are doing great. Sorry to hear about your foot and I hope it just gets better on its own so you don’t have to go to the doctor. I’m participating in this challenge to and its really keeping me motivated. It sounds like you have alot of marathons coming up and I would love to eventually be able to participate in something like that but for right now I’m just walking until I lose alittle more weight. Good luck with the challenge and with your weight loss. I hope you don’t mind me adding you as one of my favorite blogs.

There’s nothing worse than an injury. There’s still time to prep for your races.

Its a bumpy road sometimes. It was so smart to rest and be careful.
There’s always something we can do.

You’ve taught me that :-)

Nooooooo!!!!!
Sounds similar to my foot problem. Why is it always the /left/ foot? I’m wondering if it’s something about how right-sided people favor one side over the other.
I thought my foot might be broken, because it hurt so much. It turns out that I was doing too much on it, which caused swelling that ended up in a pinched nerve on the bottom of the foot. That’s what really caused the pain.
The foot doctor told me that the pain was made worse by “overuse” — so it’s ellipticals and rowing machines for me. Once I get the orthotics (~$400 if you don’t have insurance) then I can start running again.
He’s got me wearing a temporary bandage with padding, which does help a lot with the pain.
Sorry for the overly long comment; I thought other people’s experiences might be helpful. If not, please disregard!

Hello! Sorry to hear about your foot! I just found your blog because I saw a comment you put on someone else’s and saw the post about no soda for a year and absolutely had to visit. I have the same soda addiction for the same reasons I think.

Anyhow, back to the foot, as a runner, I agree with everything Amy said. I’ve had three running-related injuries. The first was plantar fasciitis. My foot looked okay but when I put weight on it, the pain radiated up from my underneath my heel. The second injury, I had no idea how I’d done it. I went for a wonderful long run, didn’t turn it, didn’t fall, nothing and 6 hours later my foot was the size of a football. The sports injury doctor told me it was a repetitive strain injury so it happens a little at a time and can be aggravated by running on uneven surfaces, which I’d done that day by cutting through a construction zone. That took a couple weeks of ice and advil and it was fine. The third was the most recent and you can read about it on my latest blog entry. I fell down a step and tore the ligaments in my ankle. This has been the worst and most painful.

So to make a short story long (hehe), if your foot didn’t swell, I’m thinking it’s the plantar fasciitis. For each of my injuries, the doctor told me “three, three, three”, “three advil, three times a day for three days” and ice. Keeps in the inflammation, pain, and swelling to a minimum.

Sorry for the long comment, I hope speedy healing for you!!
